As detailed in the first part, Coffeyville was the end of the Dalton gang. This is a synopsis of a re-fight of that famous battle played a few months ago using Six Gun Sound from Two Hour Wargames. The battle starts with Bob and Emmett Dalton in the 1st National Bank while on the street behind them Grat Dalton, Bill Power, and Dick Broadwell are attempting to rob the Condon Bank. Although the banks were across the street from each other, the 1st National Bank had no entrance on the same street as the Condon. So instead of being in supporting positions, each group starts essentially on their own. The forces involved were the three Daltons, all CV 5, while the other two, Dick and Bill were CV 4s. The citizens were all CV 3 with the exception of John Kloehr who was a 5. In Six Gun Sound the CV of the figure is used for both Reaction (morale) and for shooting. Arrayed against the 5 outlaws was a pool of 20 citizens, including Kloehr, whose locations would be generated at random. The only restrictions were that no more than 8 citizens could be active at the same time and the outlaws had to place their horses in the alley a few blocks away as they had done historically. The first turn started with 4 citizens firing at Bob and Emmett as they looked out the windows of the bank. Both brothers received minor scratches and after passing a reaction test they returned fire. Bob dropped one citizen with a Bad Wound causing him to ‘duck back’ into cover Emmett returned fire and the citizen also decided to duck back into cover (when a character Ducks Back he cannot see or be seen). As the two citizens ducked back, Bob and Emmett busted out into the street. The last two citizens gave Bob another scratch. Passing his reaction test Bob returned fire causing the citizen to Duck Back. Emmett couldn’t return fire, as the citizen had shot at him from behind. The next turn saw Bob and Emmett turn the corner onto 9th Street, heading in the direction of the alley where the horses were waiting. Meanwhile, Grat, Bill, and Dick came under fire from 4 citizens in cover across from the Condon Bank. Grat received a scratch but his return fire made one of the citizens duck back. Bill Powers took a scratch and ducked back while Dick Broadwell’s return fire made one of citizen run for home. On their part of the turn the trio burst out into the street and into a hail of gunfire. Grat and Bill took Bad Wounds while Dick returned fire. The two badly wounded outlaws ducked back into the bank bleeding profusely while Dick headed down the street. The next turn Dick received a Bad Wound as he made it to the corner. Failing his Reaction test, Dick decided he had had enough and ran for his life down the street towards Ninth. As he reached the corner he saw Bob and Emmett as they were making their way east along Ninth. Just then John Kloehr and the marshal stepped into the street. Bob fired at Kloehr and missed but Emmett fired and killed the would be hero. But as he did the marshal, who had stepped out from behind the outlaws, shot Emmett in the back. Stumbling forward, Emmett burst into the saloon and Bob quickly followed. As Dick Broadwell ran down Ninth Street 2 more citizens joined the marshal across from the saloon. Meanwhile, back at the Condon Bank the 4 citizens, (another brave soul had replaced the coward that had run at the first shot) waited for the outlaws to make their move. With only one door it didn’t take long. Bill Powers and Grat Dalton burst outside into the street and into history as the citizens cut them down. Both outlaws got a second Bad Wound, killing them. Back at the saloon, Bob and Emmett ran onto the street and under a hail of fire made it down the block. As the citizens pursued the outlaws, Bob and Emmett stopped at the corner and shot two citizens, knocking them both down and out with Bad Wounds. Just ahead Dick Broadwell had reached the corner of the alley where the horses were. He ran to the horses at the same time as three citizens saw him. Just before he could jump onto his horse, three shots rang out and the third outlaw lay dead in the street. Giddy over their success with Dick Broadwell the three citizens turned the corner and came face to face with Emmett and Bob. Drawing down on them, Bob shot and killed one citizen while Emmett scratched the other, causing him to runaway. But the third citizen calmly shot Bob, knocking him unconscious with a Bad Wound. The citizens went first in the next turn, and the same citizen finished off Emmett with another Bad Wound. In less than an hour the battle was over. Bill Powers, Dick Broadwell, Grat and Emmett Dalton all had earned a ride to Boot Hill while Bob Dalton recovered from his wounds in the state penitentiary. Two citizens had died, including Kloehr; two spent months recovering from bad wounds, while 3 others suffered minor injuries (scratches). Unlike the historical gunfight, Kloehr did not figure into the re-fight at all. However, one citizen was responsible for the death and capture of two of the outlaws. No doubt the governor saw fit to give him a medal. Overall the solo re-fight worked well. The low CV of the citizens caused them to miss more than the outlaws as well as fall down when receiving a Bad Wound. The better CV of the outlaws allowed them to continue after taking the first Bad Wound although Bob did go unconscious when he was hit. The battle was actually pretty close as when the last two outlaws were killed only three citizens remained in a position to stop them. This was the third time I had re-fought Coffeyville, twice as demos at conventions, and all three times the results were the same. However, another gamer I know ran the re-fight at a con in Toronto and he reported that the outlaws did significantly better, escaping with only a collection of Bad Wounds.
