NHMGS

Special Events Coordinator

By Stephen M. Allen

Well let me start by introducing myself, my name is Steve Allen and I have been gaming since I was 12 years old. I have been a member of NHMGS for about 5 years or so. Over the years I have attended Enfilade, Breakthrough, NHMGS Auction and Museum of Flight Game Day. And I must say that by and all I have enjoyed all the events that I have attended.

January 5th was the first executive meeting I have attended, and I must say it was a productive and entertaining afternoon. All 5 hours of it. During this marathon chat one of the main themes of the meeting seemed to be on the mission and goals of the NHMGS organization' It was pointed out that the mission statement of the NHMGS is the formation of an umbrella organization to encourage and promote Historical gaming in the Northwest. Having reaffirmed this goal the meeting moved on to ways to make this more of a reality than a statement.

The Northwest is a big area and there are many cities in our sphere of influence. It was decided that we needed to reach out to the average gamer in all these areas and let them know we are here and that we provide gaming information and events for the enjoyment of all historical gamers. The first step to get the ball rolling was a redefining of the job and responsibilities of the Vice Presidents of the NHMGS. For several years now we have had VPs but some did not want the job or had been roped into it and never told just what they were supposed to be doing as a VP. So to address this situation we redefined what we felt would be a responsible job for a VP:

    1. VPs will act as a point of contact for any gaming clubs and gamers in their territory.

    2. VPs will try to help gamers new to his area find a gaming group where he can join a like minded group of gamers.

    3. VPs will try to make contact with gaming groups in his area and gather information so that the NHMGS executive can help advertise and support these events.

    4. VPs will hold at least one NHMGSsanctioned event each year. This event will be held in a public venue such as a meeting room in a Library, a Veteran's Hall, community center or a local gaming store. It will be open to the public and anyone interested in historical gaming. Events will have a modest admission charge to offset the cost of the venue. The size of the event will be up to the VP, it can have 2 or 10 gaming tables (6x12) whatever he feels will best serve his area.

    5. VPs will try to encourage gamers in his area to attend and host games at the VP events in other territories in an effort to expand gaming in the Northwest.

    6. VPs will help promote the hobby by putting up event posters and giving out flyers to hobby stores and other likely gathering places.

So after many hours of discussion, it was decided that I would be the one to put the schedules together and coordinate all these events.

Which brings me to what exactly my responsibilities are.

The Special Events Coordinator will:

    1. Establish and maintain a schedule of events at least six months in advance, a year if possible.

    2. Work with the VPs to help pick venues and schedule their events.

    3. Assist in preparing advertising material and ensure information is posted to Newsletter and Website.

    4. Work with all Convention Directors to confirm dates and help with venue selection if required.

    5. Assist in scheduling games for the VP special events

    6. Ensure the schedule of events is evenly distributed over the course of the whole year and does not conflict with major events that run annually.

    7. Assist the executive as required.

Well now that its been carved in stone all that's left is to get to the doing. I will be talking with the VPs and other gamers who hold regular events and will be putting a schedule together shortly. If anyone is interested in taking part or helping organize these events you can contact me anytime by email at big-dog@telus. net or call me at 604889-4970. 1 think the number of gamers in the Northwest is considerably larger than those we know about. The only way to contact them is to get out there and game and let them know we are around and interested in their involvement with NHMGS.
