15mm Limey & Slimeys Ships

From Prevailing Winds

by Tim McNulty

I just received some new 15mm ships for Limey & Slimeys (L&S). Jim Moulton is the proprietor of Prevailing Winds, the new company in Auburn N.Y. making these ships. Jim used to live here in Washington a couple of years ago when he was introduced to L&S by myself & Bob Seagle. After a very enjoyable game he wanted to know where he could obtain his own ships. He was disappointed when we told him that the L&S ships were no longer being made.

Jim, not wanting to be deterred, started making his own ships out of wood. The first ones he made were simply beautiful. They were a lot cleaner and looked better than L&S ships. L&S made only I believe 6 different ships, Prevailing Winds has about doubled that number and are adding more . Jim is designing his boats from naval drawings of original ships. The ships vary in the amount of guns & ship size and I believe historical period during the age of sail. I do not know of any prices yet as they haven't been decided on when I talked with Jim.

I received 5 different ships from Jim a 12 gun brig, 4/12 gun sloop, 4/12gun cutter, 2 gunboats and a row galley used on the Great Lakes during for AWI or war of 1812. All very nice in quality. The Prevailing Winds ships are now cast in resin and are very clean. You must assemble masts, sails as you did with L&S ships. There are directions on the back of the packaging showing you how to configure the mast and sails, something L&S didn't have. The L&S ships came with Minifig guns and crew, Prevailing Winds ships sadly do not include these. When I talked with Jim he was trying to remedy this with either Peter Pig or Minifigs guns & crew.

Prevailing Winds is also making their own set of rules to go with their line of ships. These rules will be more in depth than L&S were. I played them a couple of times when Jim was living here. They were a lot of fun and filled in all the gaps L&S has. The rules are still easy to understand and play with the added information.

Jim is planning to have everything up and running for Historicon, where he is planning to have a trade table and run games to kick off Prevailing Winds. Jim is a gifted craftsman, I am sure that he and his line of Prevailing Winds 15mm ships will be a success as they fill a gap left by L&S in improved quality and variety. I'm looking forward to Historicon as I intend on going this year. It looks as if I'm going to have to get an even bigger suitcase or two.
