At the end of WWII the Ordinance Section of the US 1st Army Headquarters compiled an unpublished statistical study of US 1st Army tank losses. The following is the data collected for all marks of the Sherman M4. 759 M4 tanks were written off as ³Total Loss² in 1st Army area from June 1944 to April 1945. 321(42%) of these burned! The following list shows these losses broken down by those weapons responsible. Enemy Tanks and Anti-tank guns: 227(30% of total). 113 burned. 37mm-1, 47mm-1, 57mm-1,75mm-92, 76mm-3, 88mm-109(48%), unknown-27. Most Common Range: 300-1000 yds.(50%) Artillery: 220(29% of total). 97 burned. 75mm-105, 77mm-1, 105mm-13, 155mm-1, 170mm-2, 178mm-6, unknown-92. Most Common Range: 100-600 yds. (38%) Mines: 144(19% of total). 8 burned. Anti-tank Rifle Grenades: 19 (3% of total). 8 burned. Ranges: 35 yds-1, 100 yds-22, 150 yds-1 Panzerfaust: 77(10% of total). 25 burned. 95% of hits at under 100 yds 81mm Mortar: 6(1% of total). 1 burned. 50% hit at 600 yds. Small Arms: One M4 was lost due to intense small arms fire at close range directed at the gun, mantlet, and sighting gear. The gun was so badly damaged it was written off as a total loss! Unknown Causes: 58(8%) All percentages are approximate and are rounded off.
