ABDA Forces - Dutch admiral Doorman was in overall command, but the allies had communications problems either due to language differences or incompatible code books.

United States Navy

    Heavy Cruiser: Houston (Northampton class - the rear gun turret on the Houston was inoperable from previous battle damage)
    Destroyers: DD-211 Alden, DD-216 John D. Edwards, DD-228 John D. Ford, DD-230 Paul Jones (all 4 stack, flush deckers)

Royal Navy

    Heavy Cruiser: Exeter (sister York)
    Destroyers: Electra, Encounter (E/F class) ; Jupiter (J/K class)

Royal Australian Navy

    Light Cruiser: Perth (Sydney class - wore a double-sized White Ensign)

Royal Netherlands Navy

    Light Cruisers: De Ruyter (flag ship-Doorman), Java (sister Sumatra)
    Destroyers: Kortenaer, Witte de With

    Imperial Japanese Navy

      Heavy Cruisers: Haguro, Nachi (Myoko Class)
      Light Cruisers: Jinstu, Naka (Sendai Class)
      Destroyers: Harukaze (Kamikaze class); Sazanami, Ushio (Fubuki class); Kawakaze, Murasame, Samidare, Yamakaze, Yudachi (Shiratsuyu class); Asagumo, Minegumo (Asashio class), Amatsukaze, Hatsukaze, Tokitsukaze, Yukikaze (Kagero class)

    The Japanese heavy cruisers used their seaplanes for spotting to good effect, the allies did not even launch theirs.
