What's Hot (and What's Not)

In Historical Time Periods

By Ed Teixeira

Mag Web (www. Magweb.com) is an Internet site that has over 45 magazines available regularly online from the Courier to MWAN and everything in between.

Although not catering to historical gamers specifically the website is a must-see for serious gamers and history buffs. Recently they conducted a survey of nearly 1,000 historical gamers to determine their favorite period of play. (Hey Mark, is 853 responses enough to obtain legitimate statistics? - ed. note - yes) Anyway, here are the results.

What are your top three favorite periods of history? (Note that answers add up to over 100% because respondents could name up to three.)

1 . Napoleonic Wars 76.61%
2. World War II 47.58%
3. American Civil War 38.71%
4. Ancients to 500 AD 34.68%
5. Renaissance 1501-1699 20.16%
6. Medieval 1000 - 1500 16.13%
7. American Revolution 15.32%
8. Seven Years War 14.52%
9. 19th Century (Franco-Prussian, Italian Wars, European Wars) 13.71%
10. 18th Century 1700 - 1760 Marlburian 12.90%
11. Colonial (Victorian British and American West) 12.09%
12. Moderns (Korean, Cold War, Vietnam, Gulf War) 11.29%
13. Dark Ages (501 - 999 AD) 8.06%
14. World War I 1914-1918 5.65%
15. Age of Sail naval 3.23%
16. War of 1812 2.42%
17. Between World Wars (1918 - 1939) 1.61%

Not a lot of surprises, although personally I would not have predicted how well the Renaissance period would have done, nor how poorly the Age of Sail did. In any case, the above results should be taken with a grain of salt but it is still interesting information.
