JR3 Scenarios

Converting to Regimental Fire & Fury

by Bill Moreno

At Cold Wars 2004, Scott Mingus asked if I could provide an article for CHARGE! The article was to be a conversion of a Johnny Reb scenario to Regimental Fire & Fury. As I have a predilection for Western battles, I thought to concentrate on this theatre of the war once again. What follows is a conversion of John Hill's Spring Hill scenario. If you wish to review the original scenario, please refer to the scenario book To the Sound of the Guns, published in 1988 by Game Designers Workshop.

Regimental Fire & Fury is currently pre-release. I am using the version dated 3/27/2004 and called version 22. It may still be downloaded from the FireandFury.com site. I will use these rules and ground scale to make this conversion. It should be noted that the operative combatant in JR3 is the individual figure. In Fire and Fury Regimental, as well as in the brigadelevel game, it is the stand that matters. While this may present some translation issues, it is still possible to make the conversion. There are two possible game scales listed below for Fire & Fury. I will use scale A, as it most closely matches Johnny Reb III. If you wish to use scale B, you may simply double the number of bases and use a 6' X 12' game board. While the board is not doubled, I think it unnecessary, as there is much dead space on the table, which may be eliminated with little affect on play.

* The number of artillerists on the base determines section strength in JR3. See page three of the rules for details.

The base sizes listed below for JR3 are as suggested in the rules. I have used the Fire & Fury base sizes below for more than ten years. They are 15mm standards, but I use 10mm troops on them for esthetic reasons.

I have written a scenario for Spring Hill using the brigade level game and I am quite familiar with the battle. Historically, it was a non-event as John Bell Hood's planned attack and cutting of the Columbia & Franklin Pike was poorly executed and did not have the desired results. However, as any Civil War Confederate general might say, "I knew John Bell Hood, I fought with John Bell Hood and you Sir, are no John Bell Hood." In this case, it is a compliment! Most gamers, therefore, will make this into a real knockdown, drag-out fight. As there is no difference in ground scale, you may use the map suggested by original scenario, which called for a 4' x 7' table.

The orders of battle call for most of Benjamin Franklin Cheatham's corps of the Army of Tennessee to be present on the battlefield. Also present are elements of Abraham Buford's cavalry division, which is part of the legendary Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry corps. The Union forces are under command of Maj. Gen. David Sloan Stanley's Fourth Army Corps.

The order of battle is attached and will convert the number of figures for the Johnny Reb III scenario to the number of bases needed to create the same regiment in Fire & Fury Regimental. I have created formulae in an ExcelTM spreadsheet to make this conversion easier and less time-consuming. If you wish to have this Excel table, you may e-mail me at ACWbill@aol.com and I will be happy to send it to you.
