There are four tactics that were in the Johnny Reb 2 rules book that didn't make it into Johnny Reb 3. These include Advancing in Rushes, Wave Assaults, Charging with Empty Guns, and Merging Units. Advancing in Rushes is designed to let part of the regiment advance while the rest provides covering fire. In order to advance by rushes, the unit must be in disorder or skirmish line. The movement order should be given, and advance by rushes should be declared. As soon as first fires are done, one half of the regiment fires as if on hold while the other half of the regiment advances half its total movement. The half that moved fires as a moving firer during the moving fires phase. When the moving fires phase is done, the half of the regiment that has not yet moves now links up with the rest of the unit. Wave Assaults are similar to brigade column, but there are two inches between each regiment. It takes a full turn to form up. The lead regiment takes all casualties from first fires. All regiments must now charge a single unit separately. The lead unit gets -2 for the dice down for impact. Each unit after the lead unit does not get the -2, but does get a -1 for each unit that has already charged. Each unit must pass a tactical competence roll to stay in order for every unit passed while charging. In order to do a wave assault, mark charge and declare a wave assault during the reveal orders phase. Charging with Empty Guns gives a -2 charge elan, but the unit can't fire during the turn. Mark charge and declare Charging with Empty Guns during the reveal orders phase. Merging Units lets those decimated units to be more than an after thought after their baptism by fire. Units must be 3" or less away from the other unit(s) that are going to form the merged unit and you need to mark form for these units. After merging (which happens during the movement phase), you are considered to still have these units, but if the merged unit is lost, then you have lost all the units within that one unit is lost. Hope you try these out as they can greatly help out the miniature general if used at the right time! Back to Table of Contents -- Charge! # 5 Back to Charge!
