Here are some frequently overlooked official rules from the Johnny Reb3 rules book. Use this cheat sheet for your next game. 1. If charged, a disordered unit may try to reform - beat the BMP with 1 die. 2. Skirmish lines must be greater than 2" in front of other units to mask fire. 3. Skirmishers may not willingly move to within 2" of enemy. 4. Artillery can fire solid shot through friendly skirmishers. 5. Veteran units that rout with a distance roll of all 5's and 6s must be picked up; elite on all 6's; green on all 4's, 5's, or 6's. 6. Seeing a rout, all units within 6" must check morale, except other routed units. 7. If two artillery horses are killed, a unit may not roll for replacements. 8. Any infantry leader may help with morale rolls for artillery, but not for artillery fire rolls. 9. Units falling back in woods or rough do so in disorder. In broken or open, fall back formed facing the same direction as originally when forced to take the morale check. 10. Artillery may pass through a formed unit (except a column on a road) without a disorder roll. 11. Holding units may countercharge (checking for disorder) if a charge comes within 6". 12. Units that fail a replacement ammo roll MUST retire to the ammo wagon. (note the must in John Hill's original rules you can't merely stand there and fire away all game long with one less die). 13. Artillery may not roll for replacement ammo, but must retire to a wagon if desiring to replenish ammo. 14. Artillery may never advance closer than 4" from the enemy. 15. Columns must move from the front, no about-face. 16. In woods or rough terrain, it takes a full move for a unit to form, limber or unlimber. 17. Skirmishers or disordered units may not "push-move." 18. Regiments at 50% loss (down 2 stands) cannot move towards the enemy without an officer accompanying them. 19. The flank of a column is its head or tail. Fire from the side of a column is 1/2 the number of figures. 20. If a unit rallies with an officer present, it may immediately reform.
