One Night's Curse

Poetry

by Terry D. Mesnard

Once upon a night not long ago
I braved the raging winter and the wind driven snow,
I tromped about in fear driven in fright
Running from beasties a prowl in the night.
A bay at the moon sent shivers down my spine
The wolves were not all that far behind.
I ran and ran but where could I go,
Over every hill were wolves and still more snow.
I stumbled and fell down a step snowy bank,
The wolves closed in closing their ranks.
My fight was lost but still I tried,
I flayed with my arms, I would fight till I died.
The wolves were many and death was near,
I prayed to the gods to deliver me from this fear.
My prayers came true, but a curse was given to me,
I felt the warm hot breath, but no body could I see.
A voice growled in my ear;
"You have cheated death, be delivered from your fear,"
"You've the spirit of the wolf so free shall you run,"
"No longer are you bound unto this world you are now my son,"
"When the moon is full your spirit shall be free,"
"For your life have I saved now you are bound unto me."
A pain tore into my chest and claws into me,
I felt the wound a fire, but not blood did I see.
My head started to swoon from the pain I felt,
I thought finally this nightmare is over, death has been del.
I awoke sometime later and to my surprise I was fine,
My clothes were torn but not a scratch could I find.
I did not learn till a month later of the contract I signed,
The price of my salvation was the curse of the damned.
I am a beast now, no longer a man,
Now with the demons of the night I run,
When the moon is full I prowl the land for fun,
Praying on the weak for the sport we seek.
Someone please take this life from me.
I believe that night, death would have better served me.
Now I live life a curse and death do I seek.
It is one night's curse that has damned me!
