RHEINCON 79: EUROPE'S LARGEST CONVENTION

Rhine Confederation's 4th Annual Convention will be held at Wiesbaden Middle School, American Housing Area in Wiesbaden, West Germany on 20, 21 and 22 October 1979.

There will be tournaments with prizes in D&D, miniatures and board games. There will also be several demonstration games and areas for open gaming.

The convention is small by American standards, but it is the largest on this continent, over 150 gamers from Europe attended the last convention. We are hoping to continue to increase the attendance, and to promote the expansion of wargaming, especially in Germany, France and the BENELUX countries.

The Rhine Confederation Wargaming Club (RHINECON) was formed by American Military, their dependents and DOD civilians to promote wargaming in Europe. The club now has over 50 members, both male and female, and in addition to its American membership, accepts European Nationals and members of the Allied Forces stationed in Europe.

RHINECON is currently establishing a Challenge Cup, with a trophy, for the semiannual Napoleonic battle with the British Army of the Rhine. We have hopes of interesting the German and French Napoleonic military clubs in the challenge.

PAPER WARS

An Artist Game Design Consortium was formally launched this June. It is made up of Rick Spence, Jim Gabel, Jim Bumpas, Frank Aker, and Jack Greene. We are currently working on three games, two of which we will publish, hopefully, in the fall. One game is on the land and sea campaign for the Turkish Straits in 1915. It will focus on the attempt to force the straits with a fleet in February of 1915 and the initial few days of the various landings. Another covers the invasion of Malaya in 1941 and the campaign to take Singapore. The third possible title covers the southern thrust at the battle of Kursk.

SQUAD LEADER TOURNAMENT

This single elimination tournament will feature Eastern front action in 1941-42. The scenarios have been developed and play tested especially for the tournament. The game situation will be given to players shortly before play begins on tournament day. The game situation will describe the defending force and the victory conditions. Opponents will then secretly bid the number of points (see rules page 28) each would require to take the attacking force. The player in each pairing with the lowest point bid will become the attacker, building the force of his choice up to his bid point total.

WARCON' 80

WarCon'80 will be held on February 1, 2, and 3, 1980 at the Menjorial Student Center of Texas A&M University. WarCon is the largest annual wargaming convention held in the Southwest and is sponsored by the A&M gaming club, GROMETS, a sub-committee of the MSC Recreation Committee. Past WarCons have had tournaments and activities scheduled through a three day period, with attendances ranging between 200-450.
