Zocchi Star Trek Ships

by Don Lowry

In issue #74 I reviewed Lou Zocchi's Star Fleet Cruiser and in #76 the Destroyer and Scout. The latest addition to this line is the Dreadnought - the heaviest ship in the fleet. All these ships are finely detailed, accurate small scale plastic models (apx. 3" long) based on the blue prints in the Star Fleet Techinical Manual, by Franz Joseph. The Dreadnought is quite similar to the Cruiser in design. The most noticeable difference is the addition of a third engine pod, attached to the upper surface of the trailing edge of the disk-shaped main hull and extending back over the engineering section. Also the main hull is somewhat larger in diameter (1 7/16" compared to 1 5/16") and thicker in cross-section. The engineering hull is also both longer and thicker than on the Cruiser and has dish antennae at both ends. Like the other models in this line the Dreadnought is molded in sturdy white plastic (not quite so white as the others, but seemingly less brittle) and snaps together without glue. A black plastic supporting stand is also included.

Zocchi is also offering a solid tin-lead alloy model of a Klingon Battle Cruiser, presumably in the same scale. It is cast in one piece, with good detail and accuracy. It's about 5/8" shorter than the Star Fleet Cruiser. It also comes with a black plastic supporting stand, but the hole in the bottom of the ship's hull, for attaching the stand, is not deep enough so that they don't fit snugly. Gluing the stand solve the problem. Now, at last the Star Fleet ships have someone to fight!

These ships are all intended as playing pieces for Zocchi's Star Fleet Battle Manual. They each come in clear plastic bags, and I believe they sell for $2.50 each. Look for them at your favorite hobby shop or order from Lou Zocchi, 7604 H Newton Drive, Biloxi MS 39532. Add 75¢ for postage and handling ($1.50 to Canada, $3.00 overseas).
