The attack upon the Chew House, a painting by the dean of American historical painting, Howard Pyle, executed in 1898. Barricading the doors and first floor windows of the mansion, the 40th Regiment of Foot poured a devistating stream of musketry upon Washington's attacking Continentals. With vivid and terrifyingly realistic detail, Pyle depicts the havoc and destruction wrought - upon the swarms of Continentals who unsuccessfully tried to reduce the place. By their stubborn bravery, the men of the 40th made the British victory at Germantown possible. (Courtesy of the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts)
