What Kind of Person Reads PF?

1976 Survey Says

by Don Lowry

According to a survey taken in issue #67 (May-June 1975) the following is known about CAMPAIGN subscribers: They are virtually 100% males (though none responded to the survey there are a couple of feminine names on the subscription list), and their average age is 26.78 years (up from 23.2 in a survey taken In 1971) with the youngest at 13 and the eldest at 50. They have an average of 15.58 years of education (college degree = 16), which is very good considering that many of them are still too young to have finished (or even started) college yet! So our average subscriber is a young man of about 27 with a college degree.

But first of all, of course, he is a wargamer. 100% indicated an interest in boardgames, while 43.52% are interested in miniatures and 41.17% in DIPLOMACY. What's more, this interest is backed by their bank accounts, for they spent an average of $145.77 each on boardgames in the past year! In addition , the average PF subscriber spent $23.33 on miniatures during the same period, or an average of $59.90 among those spending anything on miniatures.

What's more they spent an average of $27.65 of that wargaming money on items advertised in CAMPAIGN and that includes a great many whose subscriptions were not yet a year old When the survey was taken! The average amongst those who indicated they had spent anything on items advertised in CAMPAIGN was $40.96 spent on such items in the past year. If you aren't advertising in CAMPAIGN you're missing your share of all these sales. And this survey, don't forget, was taken in the midst of a severe recession!

According to the survey taken with issue #71, an average of 1.97 persons reads each copy of CAMPAIGN. Therefore, multiply the paid circulation by this figure to obtain the total audience for ads placed in CAMPAIGN: 3,128.36. The same survey indicated that our average subscriber spent $130.67 over the past 12 months on books and magazines related to wargaming and history, indicating a tremendous market for this type of product!
