Official Rule Changes

Napoleon

These are revisions to the rules of NAPOLEON. The will clarify, improve, and give better play balance to the game. Existing rules are unchanged except where dealt with in the following sections.

SETTING UP THE GAME 3. The French player may deploy in French towns of his choice with a maximum of 12 units in any one town.

MOVEMENT 4. A maximum of 10 units can move along a major road instead of 8. Minor road maximum remains at 6 units.

BATTLES 2. When attacked, the defender does not have the option to retreat immediately and must set up for battle.

EXCEPTION: If less than three units are attacked they are "routed" and must retreat immediately after taking rout attrition.

The last sentence of rule 2 should read "The DEFENDER may not alter his deployment once the ATTACKER begins to deploy.'

4. The ATTACKER always has the first battle turn.

BATTLE SEQUENCE (clarification) In a player's battle turn, the followinq sequence must be followed for each battl being fought:

1. RETREAT UNITS ( if desired) from the battle. (see RETREATS)

2. Make all battle moves and/or battle fires as desired.

3. Add REINFORCEMENTS (if any) to the reserve.

BATTLE MOVES

Diagram: the arrows indicating "ADVANCE TO ENGAGE" and WITHDRAW FROM ENGAGEMENT" should point in the reverse directions.

SQUARES 3. Infantry units may form square on their first battle turn after being engaged. They way not 'break square' until disengaged by all enemy units in that column.

RETREATS (replaces all previous retreating rules)

1. At the beginning of each of his battle turns, a player has the option to retreat a maximum of three (3 units. (Retreating units units may not move or fire in that battle turn.) Units may be retreated from the reserve or from any column. However, if a column is engaged by enemy units, units retreating from that column must take rout attrition before leaving the battle.

2. Units may only retreat to a town or towns adjacent to the battle. Units may never retreat to a town containing enemy units or to another battle. Subject to this, the ATTACKER can only retreat to towns from which he moved to create the battle or to towns he subsequently reinforced the battle from. The DEFENDER can retreat to any town or to towns not available to the attacker. it is suggested that the ATTACKER mark with coins all towns he moved from to start the battle or reinforced from during the battle, to clarify possible retreats for either player.

3. Units which have retreated from one battle may not reinforce any other battle taking place simultaneously and may not be returned to the battle they left.

4. When retreating, if a player "routs himself" all units remaining in the battle must take rout attrition.

5. Any units which can not make a legal retreat must remain in a battle and, if routed, they are eliminated.

REINFORCEMENTS 1. Any units in towns adjacent (along a road) to a battle may be used to reinforce the battle. Either player may add ONE unit for reinforcements from EVERY adjacent town to each battle at the end of his battle turn. The DEFENDER may not add reinforcements in his FIRST battle turn.

PURSUIT FIRE: Delete this rule.

LOGISTICS

Brussels becomes a supply/communication center for both Anglo-Dutch and Prussians. That is, if Brussels is occupied by one or more French units, one AngloDutch and one Prussian units are removed from the game at the end of every Allied turn. Ghent remains solely an Anglo-Dutch supply/communication center. Leige remains solely Prussian.
