PzF 72: Mail Call

Letters to the Editor

by the readers

Dear Don:

Some thoughts on the tons debates currently raging in our letters column and on Campaign in general.

As for whether you should accept ads from Taurus, I believe you have an obligation to your readers and your advertisers to reject ads from Taurus. For as long as ads from this company appear, other ads lose credibility. Issue 69, you stated that you did not how enough information to pass judgement on Taurus; but AH, GDW, and SPI have all condemned Taurus. It appears to me that SPI and Miller are guilty of libel, or Taurus of mail fraud. Considering the reputation of each party, I would believe Miller and SPI.

Regarding the great pro and con SPI debate, I came down on SPI's side. God knows their mail order service is bad enough, and they am sometimes arrogant, but their games are excellent. When people like Steven Brooks attack SPI because of turkeys like Flying Circus, they an kicking a dead horse. Its 1975 releases are almost all excellent, well-playtested games. Although there are exceptions like WWIII, Leyte and Sixth Fleet, 1975's games are generally high quality.

I do not join the majority of your readers in condemning SPI. I do join them in in praising CAMPAIGN. Wargaming has a need which you fill for an unbiased magazine that can give objective game reviews.

Sincerely, Dave Kopel

Maybe 1975's games were great, but if you wasted dollars and time with previous games that were not great, you probably wound never be incluined to try new ones. If only there were a way to tell good from bad before paying for them. --DSL

Dear Don:

Just recieved issue 71, and in it I noted a letter by Vance Van Borries. I cannot commant on his personal problems with JAGDPANTHER, not having been part to them, but have had considerable dealing with JP, and feel the other side of the coin should be shown.

Steve Cole want out of his way to hunt me down and get issues of BUSHWACKER to an to compensate for credit from ABWEHR. It was a most satisfying experience - after watching my money go down the drain on subs to IFW, BATTLEFLAG, SPARTAN (or so it seemed at the time) and CONFLICT (I have almost two years of issues coming from them, incidentally, and have heard nothing about ever being compensated -- yet they still have the brass ____ to market games, undoubtedly to some degree financed by the capital provided by such as myself. (And you still carry their ads?!)

Several times I haw ordered games from JP and delivery has always been prompt. And the products fully as advertised. Their payment for articles published is not large -- but they are not a large magazine either, and upon reading the info provided, one knows in advance the degree of payment to be expected far an article.

Sincerely, Shayne C Gad

We didn't carry and advertisement from S.D.C., but we DID ads for their games for ourselves--that is, we buy their games wholesales and sell them to you. --DSL

Dear Don,

Say, could you print in CAMPAIGN that I am desperately trying to get in touch with Douglas Malewicki, the designer of the NUCLEAR WAR card game? I will give a year's subscription to any of my magazines to anyone who can give we his address. Thanks.

Till later, Rick Lodmis

I could. Write to Flying Buffalo, Inc. PO Box 1461, Scottadale, AZ 85252.

Dear Don,

I am really impressed with the last three issues of PF. If you continue with this same quality, I can assure you that I will remain a loyal subscriber, and will recommand the magazine to my friends.

PANZERFAUST fills an important gap in the hobby not filled by MOVES or the GENERAL. It offers a critical view and an unbiased viewpoint of the entire hobby, something which is badly needed.

0f all the reviews of the Origins I convention, PF's was superior to THE GENERAL or MOVES and provides a clear view of what happened.

The idea of having an interview with minor companies in the wargaming business is great. I would like to see interviews with people from Game Designers'Workshop, Simulation Design Corporation, Balboa Game Company and others. More interviews, please!

I can nderstand, with all the new games in the market, why so few strategy articles are coming out. People don't play as often or master it as well and thus unsure about writing strategy articles. I know I am.

One of your features is extremely valuable to me. I am referring to Thumbnail Analysis. No other game review column is as good as it is. The Shrapnel articles of F.O. of MOVES last time was poorly done compared to Thumbnail Analysis; and they were even comparing some of the same games! I now use Thumbnail Analysis as a basis to where my wargaming dollars go. It has saved me from sending out orders for games which I wouldn't have liked. and tuned me on to some great games.

I would like to see Thumbnail Analysis expanded by one or two pages and cover even wore. There are a lot of good games out them which aren't revieved. For example, some of the pouch games from SDC or Battleline's new SHENANDOAH CAMPAIGN. However, I can understand how difficult it would be to get a copy of each game to review.

All in all, PANZERFAUST is the best magazine out on the wargaming market today. Keep up the good work, Don, and I will be reading your magazine for many years.

Sincerely, Jack C. Thomas

I can only review games we RECEIVE, and review all that we do receive. We can't afford to BUY a copy of every game that comes out. -- DSL

Dear Don

Just a quick note to tell you how much I enjoy your fine magazine. The articles always interest me no matter what period or subject, and the game reviews are great. Your magazine is a real credit to wargaming and very enlightening.

Terrence Manton

Dear Mr Lowry,

I've been a subscriber to PANZERFAUST magazine since Mr Don Greenwood was editor. I've noted the vast changes and improvements in PANZERFAUST over the last few years and I like the changes--at least most of them, except the exclusion of an occasional game. But, I want to congratulate you on your move to including occasional variants.

Whilst lookin, through my latest issue, issue 71, which I think is one of the best of the last few) there is no doubt about my resubscribing. May PANZERFAUST AND CAMPAIGN magazine last far into the future.

Subscibingly yours, Wayne Wesenberg

Dear Mr. Lowry,

It's a pleasure to read reviews of games from independent eyes rather than reading between the ad lines before buying the product. All too often anticipation turns into disappointment.

Enclosed is a money order for a resubscription. Keep up the good effort.

Richard Albertin
