Line of Communications

Editorial

by Don Lowry

Well, here we go with the new title. (For those of you just starting with us this issue, this magazine was formerly known as just "Panzerfaust".)

The response to our elimination of postage charges - or to something - has been quite satisfactory so far, so they will stay eliminated until further notice. Incidentally, we must apologize to those of you who had a long wait for your Jedko games. It took longer to receive our first order from Australia than we had estimated. This time we have some more new games for you, but from a lot closer to home: Simulations Design Corporation's "Pouch Series" games (see "Thumbnail Analysis" and ads).

Lots of votes have come in for the Best Game of the Year and Best Game of All Time awards and, no doubt, a few more will come in during the next two months for one thing, the postal strike in Canada has kept our subscribers north of the border from getting their last issue so far.

I hope it's settled before this one gets out. Anyway the results will be announced in the next issue. Meanwhile another 6 issues have rolled by (the first 6 printed in California) and its time for the Best-ofthe-Year Bonuses, but first the results of last issue's Return Fire. The 1- 10 ratings averaged out like this:

    Thumbnail Analysis 7.75
Wargames North of the Border 7.D5
    Wargaming Down Under 7.03
    Origins I 6.90
    Issue # 70 as a whole 6.80
Caesar Beware the Orders of Battle 6.12
    Line of Communications 6.00
    Mail Call 5.94
    Book Review 5.31
    G2 Reports 5.26
    Miniature Warfare 5.9
    MINUTEMAN, Revolutionary or Not 5.04

Thumbnail Analysis continues to top the list and is up from 7.41 last time. Th overall rating is also up, slightly, fr 6.74. It is also nice to see that ever thing averaged above average (5). For once the best three voting agrees with the 1-10 ratings, as follows:

Wargames North of the Border Greene and Hoffman $5
Wargaming Down Under - Greene $3
    Origins I - Starks - $2

Now, taking those 1-10 ratings, and comparing them with those for the previous 5 issues, we come up with the best articles of the year in each of 6 categories and each will receive a bonus of $10 credit. The winners are:

History - The Yom Kippur War (8.00) Clotfelter
Review - Six from Avalon Hill (7.17) Lowry
Misc - Wargames North of the Border (7.05) - Greene & Hoffman
Strategy - The East is Red (6.77) Starks
Variants - THIRD REICH Addenda (6.68) Kane
Design - Some Thoughts on CRTs (6.12) Michalski

An interesting item to note here is that of these, 6 articles are from Issue #61.

You will notice on the Return Fire sheet this time some more questions the answer to which should be of considerable interest to our potential advertisers. We would greatly appreciate your cooperation in answering and returning these question Just in case you didn't notice, as of last issue we have added several pages in the magazine and have the major articles professionally type-set. This time you might notice the addition of a second color of ink on some inside pages. All of this costs money, but we can afford it as long as we continue to get lots of outside advertising. Additional ads will go on additional pages and will not cut into the space for articles and columns.
