I'm happy to report that the Second Down East Wargaming Convention (DEWCON II, 2930 June) was a moderate success. That is we didn't go broke paying for the hall, or anything. We had 29 paying attendees plus eight members of the Down East Wargamers - down slightly from last August. Considering our isolated location and the fuel crunch I guess that's not too bad. Three wargamers came from as far away as Virginia. We also had a reporter from the Portland, Maine newspaper who took a lot of pictures. Anyway everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The 9mm Napoleonic and Civil War games were well attended. WWII in 1/76 scale and sailing ships were also very popular miniatures events, while a STALINGRAD tournament (wherein Paul Siraqusa edged our Dave Roberts), FIGHT IN THE SKIES I and DIPLOMACY kept the boardgamers busy We may do it again in August, for detaiis write DEWCON III, Box C, Belfast, ME 04915. Word of four more conventions has come in since the last issue. The Miniature Wargamers of Western New York are holding their 1st Annual Convention in Buffalo, N.Y., Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 & 8, 1974. Contests in Miniature Modeling, one-on-one tanks, DIPLOMACY and open board games. For information and registration write R.J. Kohlbacher, 74 Fairfax Drive, W. Seneca, N.Y. 14224. And from Sept. 5 - 8 the International Plastic Modelers Society will hold their 1974 National Convention at the Grand Hotel in Anaheim, California. They expect an audience of from 600 to 800 IPMS members plus another 2,000 to 3,000 modelers from the general public. Featured will be a model show, displays by participating exhibitors, seminars, film presentations and a banquet. For further information write IPMS Convention 74, 3713 S. Van Ness, Santa Ana, CA. 92707. Sparta will hold their National Gaming Convention August 24-25 at Waterloo, Iowa (the same weekend as GENCON VII). Events will include sports gaming and military gaming, including a $500 cash first prize for the World Series Baseball Tournament using the Statis-Pro baseball game. They will also hold East Con IV in Fall River. Mass, 31 Aug - ~ Sept. More information can be obtained from Spartan International, Inc., Box 1017, Bellflower, Ca. 90706. Any wargamers in northern Maine, or Canada's maritime provinces should know about the Northern Aroostook Warqame Club. This is an informal group whose interest centers around 25mm Napoleonics, English Civil War, some WW2, and ancients. Five of them meet weekly for a game, usually Napoleonics (upwards of 7500 figures and a local version of COLUMN, LINE & SQUARE rules). Anyone interested in joining them should contact Jim Page, Box-645, Caribou, ME 04736. The central Maine area is covered by our own Down East Wargamers Association (9mm Napoleonics & Civil War 1/76 WWII). Contact Pete Rice, RFD 1, Searsport, ME 04974. The Southern Maine Wargamers are into 25mm ancients and 15mm English Civil War miniatures, plus boardgames. Contact Burt Labelle, Forest Park #23, Biddeford, ME 04005. Dates and a site for NOREASTER III (the Connecticut convention sponsored by the American Wargaming Association and the New England Wargamers Association) have been picked. The dates are 23 -25 August (same as GENCON VII!), but they forgot to tell me where! European wargamers interested in contacting other wargamers in Europe should write to Walter Luc Haas, 4053 Basel, Achilles Bischoff Str. 6, Switzerland CH-4053. Mr. Haas is interested in orqanizing a Continental European wargamers' club to sponsor conventions and publish a magazine, either in German or English. He didn't say, but I assume that American, Canadian and British servicemen stationed in Europe would be welcome to participate. Drop him a line and let him know what you're into. Avalon Hill has announced that they are bringing out five games that they will sell via mail order only. Available will be revised versions of ANZIO, CHANCELLORSVILLE, GUADALCANAL and JUTLAND. Also they bought rights to Guidon Games' ALEXANDER THE GREAT, revised version. At least ANZIO and CHANCELLORSVILLE, have been extensively reworked. All will be in the old flat box format. AH's regular fall addition (in bookcase format) will be THIRD REICH, covering all of WWII in Europe.
