Magazines

LA VIVANDIERE is fairly new magazine published by the manufacturers of GHQ MicroArmour and Napoleonics. The editor is Dennis P. O'Leary. No. 2 is just out. The format is 32 pages of 5.5" x 8.5" size on slick paper. Articles and features include quite a bit of humor, including a very funny "Complete board name" feature, "The Occupation of the Rhineland". Serious articles include "Soviet Armour In World War II", by Paul B. Seguin, a very superficial view of a subject already familiar to just about all wargamers who give a damn at all; "3-D PANZERBLITZ", by Richard L. Borczak, an excellent exposition on how to build a 2 for 1 blow-up of Avalon Hill's PANZERBLITZ board with "real" hills, gullies, etc. for use with GHQ Micro-Armour; and "Napoleon's Horseless Soldiers", by Richard Laurence Baron, about French foot dragoons of the line, 1805-6, with lots of uniform information for miniatures Painters. It appears to be the editor's intention to concentrate on items of interest to miniatures wargamers. Published quarterly, the subscription rate is $2.50 per year. Single issue price is 65t. Available from Palikar Publications. 2634 Bryant Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55408.

THE AVALON HILL GENERAL Vol. 10, No. 6, Mar-Apr 1974 - includes a feature that my ego isn't going to let pass by without notice. This issue at last brings to print the "Series Replay" game of BATTLE OF THE BULGE between Randy Reed (designer of RICHTHOFEN'S WAR and 1776) as the Germans, and your quaint, but lovable old editor as the Americans. A very interesting analysis is provided by the comments of Dave Roberts.

Of course other articles are included in the issue; the feature being "Guadalcanal, the Island, the Campaign, the Game", by Joel S. Davis. Subscriptions sell for $5.00/year (6 issues), and single issues for $1.00, from the Avalon Hill Co., 4517 Harford Rd, Baltimore MD 21214. Also, the GENERAL is now available at some stores that sell AH games.

MILITARY MODELLING is a monthly British publication of excellent appearance. On a par, physically with the American Magazine SCALE MODELER, but specializing in military models. Articles cover a considerable range, such as how to convert some standard kit into a model of some related but different subject, or a report on a competition of the International Plastic Modellers Society, or wargame rules for "younger generals", data about uniforms or vehicles of some famous (or not-so-famous) unit.

But perhaps even more interesting than the articles are the announcements of new products and the many pages of ads. All this is very profusely illustrated with excellent black and white photos and drawings, with occassional full color. Subscriptions, to the US or Canada are $8.50 (single issue $1.00) from Model & Allied Publication Ltd., PO Box 35, Bridge Street, Hemel Hempstead, Herts HP1 1EE, England.

GAMERS GUIDE has undergone tremendous evolution since last reviewed here. About a year or so ago its founder, Ken Borecki, sold to Spartan International (the club) which then produced it in newspaper format for a while. Since the latter has formed a subsidiary group called the Amateur Gamers Association the GAMERS GUIDE has now become the house organ for the AGA. As such, it is developing into a nice little general wargaming journal, comparable in many ways to the old INTERNATIONAL WARGAMER or SPARTAN INTERNATIONAL MONTHLY. The format is 7" x 8" and is 32 pages, offset printed. Current editor is Dan Hoffbauer (who also edits the SPARTAN) but he plans to turn it over to Nick Smith in the near future. Several gaming articles are included, plus reviews of games and magazines, want ads, letters and the unique feature of GAMERS GUIDE, the survey of readers opinions on various wargaming topics. 60 cents per issue or $3.00/6 issues from the Amateur Gamers Association, Box 5076, Long Beach, CA 90805.
