THE AVALON HILL GENERAL begins its new look with the 10th anniversary issue (May-June 1973). Under the able hand of editor Don Greenwood, the GENERAL has improved considerably. The old scroll cover is gone, replaced by one which reflects the feature article -- in this case some fine drawings of Napoleonic troops in action at Waterloo. Expansion to 26pp plus the liberal use of color in diagrams and charts is also a great plus. The articles naturally still deal with the play of Avalon Hill games, but the quality is improved. Don Greenwood has been successful in getting many noted gamers and writers to contribute. Two new features are a "Design Analysis" column and the "Series Replay". The latter will be a move by move account of a PBM game between two experts along with the comments of the players and an analysis by a third party. The first game wasn't ready for this issue but there is a replay of a PANZERBLITZ game which took place in the AH design offices to whet our appetites. "Series Replay" should prove to be a most interesting and worthwhile feature. Also there is a new reader response page which contains the discount coupon, reader buyer's guide, contest, opponents wanted ad form and a questionaire. Still only $5.00 for six issues, the GENERAL is a must if you're interested in Avalon Hill games. Don Featherstone's WARGAMERS NEWSLETTER (32pp, offset, $6.50/12 issues) is one of the oldest and best magazines devoted to wargaming with miniatures. Each issue is filled with battle reports, rules ideas, figure conversion and painting information, magazine and figure reviews, and wargaming news from manv talented writers on both sides of the Atlantic. If you're interested in miniatures, this is one of the best. THE WORLD WAR II HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER/MAGAZINE is edited and published by Ray Merriam, 218 Beech St., Bennington, Vt. 05201. The single copy price is 5U and subscriptions are available only with membership in the Association. Membership is open to anyone interested; write the editor for details. This 18pp offset publication contains historical and organizational article book, magazine and product review, and Association news. The content is generally excellent. The latest issue (vol no. 1-2) has an order of battle of 1941 type German Panzer Divisions which should interest many gamers. Primarily an historical magazine, and well worthwhile if WWII is your period. THE SGC DISPATCH is a newsletter put out by the Simulations Games Commitee. The free introductory issue is all we have so far and it is otfset printed on both sides of an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet. The editor states that future issues will contain at least one such page and probably from 3 to 6. The features will include game reviews, contests, free want ads, and news about conventions, clubs, games, and whatever else may be of interest. Sub are $3.00 for 12 issues mailed 1st class, and are available from editor Richard Hamblen, Box 148, Hampden, Me. 04444. HOOSIER ARCHIVES is edited and published by our own DIPLOMACY editor, Walter Buchanan, RR #3, Lebanon, IN 46082. He puts it out weekly on his own Dittograph and charges $2.00 for 13 issues or 6 for $1. H.A. is devoted entirely to the 1 game, DIPLOMACY, with articles on strategy, demonstration games between expert players (such as the "Grudge Game" reprinted in the last issue of PF), rating systems, and news of the postal DIPLOMACY hobby. See the DIPLOMACY column in this magazine for an example of the type of articles found in H.A. Highly reccommended reading for DIPLOMACY buffs.
