The Society of Ancients

Celebrates 30th Birthday

by Ben Wilkins

The Society of Ancients was established in September 1965 by Tony Bath with 22 founder members, including Derek Guyler and Phil Barker, when our hobby was in its infancy. It was set up by like minded people for the enjoyment of wargaming and military history in the Ancient & Medieval period.

Now, 30 years later we have a society of over 1,000 members worldwide, from Ecuador to New Zealand, sharing a common interest through the pages of our bi-monthly journal 'Slingshot'.

We are celebrating its 30th Birthday on September 23rd, 1995 at our SOCIETY WARGAMES DAY and AGM in the Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, High Holborn, London. We have invited the following societies - Pike & Shot, Wargames Developments and Lance & Longbow, to share this occasion with us.

The main hall is booked from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm to allow a full day of period wargames, demonstrations and discussion on topics of military history. A few selected traders have also been invited. A Bring & Buy stall will be run for the benefit of those attending. The Society of Ancients AGM will be discreetly held in the afternoon from 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm.

Come and learn more about our society, join in the fun, entrance is FREE and you do NOT have to be a member to attend. There are also plenty of watering holes within walking distance for food and drink. The nearest tube station is Holborn.
