The GreenCard Round Up

Clash of Eagles
Peninsula Italica

Reviewed by Richard H. Berg

What's coming out of Europe these days? Lots. The following is a (very) brief sample of what the Italians aee doing.

PENINSULA ITALICA. Camelot Game Co, available through Boulder Games. Peninsula Italica is a multiplayer game set in the Italian Peninsula, in the 4th century BC, just as Rome started to expand. The map uses area movement. This is not really a wargame, it's more a family game. It's quite simple and fast-playing, and has few rules to model the military, economic, and social behavior of the pre-Roman populations. Play tactics essentially consist of garrisoning rear territories and grabbing as many new territories as you can. Because its a multiplayer game, the diplomacy aspect is important in what would otherwise be a simple attrition game. Graphically it's just fair. I was disappointed that it was historically bland. Those looking for a simple game that can be played in a few hours might enjoy it. I'll give it a C. ...Brandon Einhorn

CLASH OF EAGLES by Ivan Arsuffi and Giacomo Fedele, from Camelot Games; available through the ubiquitous Boulder games. Clash of Eagles, a WWII air-to-air combat game, is a nice addition to any air-combat gamers closet. The game was made in Italy, although an English translation was provided. It's very good for big multi-player battles; it plays fast … you can finish more than one game in a single afternoon. It's weaknesses include: not quite finished (any experienced air gamer can easily make it work); lacks a scenario system; needs to have the maneuver system expanded to account for altitude. I enjoyed this game. I rate it a B-/C+. If nothing else it has big, colorful counters. ... Martin Gallo
