The latest craze … well, if not a craze, certainly a trend…is the emergence of a large number of DTP games, that's Desk Top Published for the acronymically challenged. I have a pile of them sitting around here, somewhere, a few of which will be reviewed in depth next issue. Suffice to say, to paraphrase Jimmy Durante, everybody's gettin' into the act! From Kerry Anderson's Canadian group I got a nice variety of games, all for about $10, including one on the Spanish Civil War, one on Korea, and a most interesting-looking item on firefighting, entitled Smokejumpers. Word around the Internet is that these are well worth the cut-and-paste effort. Drop Kerry a line at 10179 90th St, Edmonton Alberta, Canada T5H 1R8. Also jumping into the electronic revolution is our old friend, Rob Markham. (Rob is also hard at work at finishing up a battalion-level Napoleon game on Auerstadt for Spearhead.) Rob's MD Company has a Race for Space game out, and one called Montcalm and Wolfe - wasn't that slotted after the Tony Danza Show? - coming out shortly. But the one to get, especially if you have a sense of humor, is Game Auction, a spin on the wargaming hobby. Reading through the descriptions of the companies, and their products, is reason enough to buy this. For starters, there's Oriole Mountain Games, with such production as "The Longest Set-Up", and "Really Advanced Squad Guy, Vol. I"; or Fuhrer Wargames, publishers of the magazine, "Strut & Conquer", whose motto is "We put the goose back into your step." I sent away for my copies of "Goosestep Uber Mars" and "Stormtroop Leather and Lace". Hope they're in a good mood out in San Luis Obispo. Was a bit tough to tell exactly who Rob was referring to, though, with Ego Game's "Desert Schmuck", "The ultimate North Africa game that combines brain numbing detail with … a bronzed silhouette of the designer … suitable for worship." Wonder who that could be? Rob can probably tell you; write him at 30 Erickson Rd, New Milford CT 06776. Another old-timer who has jumped into the DTP pool is Lou Coatney. Lou seems to have abandoned his effort to game the Eastfront from every conceivable angle, weighing in with a Guadalcanal game somewhat clumsily entitled "Sky, Sea and Jungle". Reach Lou at 626 Western, Macomb IL 61455. Again we'll try for next issue for a review. And for those who like to keep track of everything that the hobby has offered over the years, Danny Holte, of Etloh Technologies, will sell you his rather thickish "Wargamer's Reference Guide", a listing - and nothing more than that, just lists, albeit complete lists - of every game from AH, S&T, XTR plus a bunch of newsletters and magazines. BROG is conspicuous by its absence. Obviously he hasn't played "Desert Schmuck". Danny can be reached at 714-891-6425, or POB 1493, Westminster CA 92684.
