Book Review:

The Tigers Are Burning

Kursk 1943

By Martin Caidin

Reviewed by Russ Lockwood

Hawthorn, 1974, $?, ISBN?, 243 pages, hardback

It may be 30 years old, and much new info has come out of the USSR archives since then, but this is still a good overview of the battle.

Caidin writes a little too breathlessly, like an overdone documentary, but the points he makes are quite valid. He starts with an appreciation of the situation and strategic initiatives that led up to Operation Citadel, a bit about the men in command, and then onto the battle itself.

Sure, authors like Glantz are more definitive because of their access to newly opened archives. But for 1974, this was state-of-the-art research.

I bought this for $1 at a used book sale, but even if it costs a few bucks, it’s worth it.
