You don't read this encyclopedia as much as pick your way through. Certainly this large format book contains a cornucopia of black and white photos and concise descriptions of weapons, commanders, battles, and other subjects.

What this visual encyclopedia offers is as complete a listing as I've seen. When I first sat down for a quick look, I ended up spending a couple hours poring over the photos and entries. I rather enjoyed the effort in translating weapon specifications into something more, such as deployment and tactical usage, strengths and weaknesses, and even the stray sarcasm. In short, it puts a little insight and pep into the entry.

John Keegan is the general editor, and has done a commendable job of putting his name on the cover. No mention of other editors, contributors, or photo credits appears in the book. It doesn't detract from the book, but it would have been nice to know. In my dim and distant memory, I recall a notice put out to freelancers for the production of a WWII encyclopedia--whether this is the result or not, I don't know. But all involved have done an excellent job.

As a quick reference guide, especially for the weaponry, this is a treat. The photos accentuate the entries, the writing gets to the point, and the entire package captivates entirely.
