With Full Honors is an excellent read, written by a 20-year combat veteran of the US Marines--so the battle scenes are sharp and believeable, even if Campatin Lannat, the hero of the Rifles, seems favored by multiple gifts of fortunate circumstance.

Sent to a backward planet that nonetheless was of strategic military value, Lannet is made to tutor a reluctant Prince. Mixed in with such mundane duty is a plot to kill the Prince, launch a coup against the empire, and the establishment of the religious-military order of the Lumin as chief governing body of the empire. And you know Lannat is the fellow to foil all the traps and plans, but he a considerable number of obstacles to overcome before he even comes close to success.

McQuinn's prose dances across the page, his conspiracies run deep and furtive, and the battle scenes show a marked intelligence for cohesiveness and an unbeatable combination of procedure and initiative.

This is the first book of a two-book series.
