On Guards

Napoleon's Imperial Guard
Organization 1812

by Andy Nunez

This diagram depicts the Imperial Guard as it was administered. Units were either designated as belonging in the Old Guard or the Young Guard. No permanent organization higher than regiment existed during peace time.

The Guard brigades and divisions that marched into Russia were formed by picking units and assigning a command staff. On the whole, the process seems to have worked well, all of Napoleon's officers and troops having "played the game of war" for so long. They could adjust to any arrangement quickly.
