December 6-7 3rd Annual Battle of Great Bridge Celebration, Chesapeake, VA. On December 9, 1775, 1st and 2nd Virginia Regiment "regulars" and Norfolk County militiamen defeated British regulars, Loyalists and "Loyal Ethiopians" at a narrow causeway and bridge that served as the link between Virginia and the Southern Colonies. The battle, considered the "Southern Bunker Hill," led directly to the British evacuation of Norfolk and to the conversion of many of Virginia's Loyalists and undecided to Patriots. Co-sponsored by the Chesapeake and Great Bridge Chapters of the National Society of the DAR, Norfolk County Historical Society, Norfolk County Militia and the city of Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Dept Will include encampments, battle re-enactments, Colonial life and skills demonstrations, colonial music, dancing, games and children's activities, period character portrayals and a wreath laying ceremony at the Battle of Great Bridge Monument. Period sutlers welcomed.
