Origins 90

This is our grand pre-Origins issue and therefore our last chance to verbally whip up on those nasty Canadians before they come down and whip up on us at the game tables. "Yankee" honor is at stake here, after all. A number of champions for truth, justice, and the American way have named themselves in our mail, so there should be some good grudge matches this year. Its time a Yank won back the Origins trophy from the lumberjacks, don't you think boys!

Of course, I, for one, shall stand boldly aloof from all this hooplah and welcome our northern friends as Southern hospitality demands (I'm no fool). The rest of you Yankee air pirates are free to blast, strafe, and shoot down as many Canadians as you can comer during the tournament. Beware, though, they're a wiley bunch and many a good ol' boy has bought the farm before the trigger-happy fingers of those cold- hearted sled dog molestors ... uh, oops, got carried away there. Anyway, suffice it to say, check six and if you find a maple- leafed aircraft on your tail, "you can thunder, and you can bitch, but don't whine!"

2nd Edition Playtest

The Korean War through Vietnam era Air Superiority game continues on track for an October / November release. The original title idea may be changed due to copyright requirements. At the time of this writing, the Air Superiority rules have all been reviewed and rewritten into 2nd Edition form.

There are some striking changes. Visual sighting, radar work, and missile flight rules have all undergone major revisions. The aircraft flight rules have been reworked to eliminate loopholes and questionable areas. The playtest force is being scaled down to four groups now and they are beginning to address Air Strike rules.

All of the rules, maps, scenarios, and data cards for this new game will be going to GDW's art department in late June. I think the playtesters have done a marvelous job and you should like the looks of the 2nd Edition series. By the way, all of the original 1st Edition data cards and game pieces will mesh fight in with 2nd Edition ones as we did not change any of the data card or counter formats.

AIR POWER News

Guy Morgan has confirmed that he'll be writing articles for us on his Flight Leader ™ and Tac-Air ™ games. We hope to canvas other designers into writing on their games as well. This is part of our expanded coverage strategy.

We have over 300 subscribers now, and therefore all that previous talk about stabelizing at sixteen pages for a while no longer applies. Tony and I have decided to make 20 pages the new standard in order to expand our coverage. As for cost increases to the subscriber: there are none! This one's on us.

By the way, keep plugging for us and show off your issues to your buddies. We're still basically a word-of-mouth journal, though we did recently take out an ad in WARGAMER magazine.

Incidentally, we're quite international now with subscribers in France, England, Sweden, Malta, New Zealand, Australia, West Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, and Canada. (Canada! ... Hey, Tony, I thought we'd cancelled those subs!)

Other News

It seems that 3W, the parent company of Battleplan magazine, intends to continue doing it. The next issue, press date unknown, is supposed to carry part II of Eagles of the Gulf. In the last issue of AIR POWER, I said that Battleplan was up for sale (I confirmed this). The latest info now is that it is no longer (probably no one wanted it). But Battleplan is a low priority for the financially troubled and restructuring 3W, and work may or may not be done on it this year. Don't hold your breath.

AIR POWER is Moving

The new address for AIR POWER will be in Huntsville, Alabama. If you have immediate questions, you may still direct them to the address listed in the back cover. Of course, all material sent to that address will be forwarded to the new one when te move is complete. The next issue will contain all the information along with a report from this year's ORIGINS.

Hope to see you in Atlanta!
