Triple Kill Over Tezgaon!

December 1971 Scenario

by Bob Gross

Background:

Squadron Leader Hag and his wingman Flt. Off. Shamshad scrambled from Tezgaon airfield to intercept an incoming raid. They had just accelerated to cruise speed when they spotted two Fitters preparing to make a run at the airfield. A fierce turning duel ensued during which one Fitter apparently fired at Hag with air-to-ground rockets (Hag claims that the Fitter fired an Atoll at him-considering that the Su-7B cannot be armed with IRMs and the ease with which he described evading the attack, one must conclude that in the heat of the action the attack appeared to be from an Atoll.).

S/L Hag managed to bag one of the Fitters with machine gun fire and was setting the other one up for the kill when two Hunters entered the fray. After a few moments more of this frenetic dogfight, the remaining Fitter managed to disengage and Hag used his remaining MG ammo to shoot down one of the Hunters. The remaining Hunter then attempted to 'get out of Dodge' and was promptly blown up by one of Hag's Sidewinders. Hag's triple kill is testimony to the fine dogfight capabilities of the Sabre 6 and his feat must rank among the greatest jet fighter sorties of all time, belonging with Cunningham'striple kill in 1972 and Alam's quadruple (quintuple?) kill in 1965.

Map: A

Game Length: 20 game turns.

Notes:

1. Two Hunters, carrying 2x 850L FT on stations 2 and 3, load=7, configuration- 1 /2, will enter from the W board edge unspotted at any allowable speed and altitude on a die roll j= than the turn number. This roll is made at the beginning of each turn, starting on turn 5 and continuing until the aircraft appear.

2. Fitters and Hunters are camouflaged, Sabres are silver. The Fitters and Sabres begin with each other spotted.

3. Sabre Loads: stations 1,4=450L FT, stations 2,3-AIM-9B. Fitter Loads: Stations 1,2,5,6= Small RP w/Medium Rockets, 3,4=600L FT. See note 1 for Hunters.

5. The Fitters may attempt to fire their RPs air-to-air. The RPs may be fired at aircraft in the missile launch phase if thefollowing criteria are met:

    a) The Fitter is a regular pilot or better, on the zero degree angle-off line of the target, at the same altitude, within 2 hexes and wings level.

    b. The roll to hit is the number of pods fired, minus 1 per hex of range, plus modifiers for pilot abilities. A hit has an attack rating of 5.

6. Optionals: Fuel: Sabre start=185, bingo= 30. Fitter start=260, bingo= 140. Hunter start=110, bingo= 75. Weather: Clear.
