Newsletter News

by J.D. Webster

Greetings gang, as I write this (early May), Tony is busily typesetting issue 13 which kicks off our third year as a Newsletter and you have probably just received issues 11 and 12 in the mail. Our determination to catchup from behind continues to exceed our actual abilities to do so but we are trying and eventually we will catch up. As you will no doubt notice, and as I mentioned before, we've been forced to downgrade from first class to the more economic bulk-rate mail. This is happening because of the increase in postal rates which occurred in February and which would make our break-even newsletter a less than break-even affair unless we take these steps.

Another plan recently dashed, was our desire to have a booth at Origins. However, again Tony and I decided we were endangering ourselves by stretching the budget too far so we backed off. We did recently join GAMA with a yearly cost of $100.00, so now we are entitled to sell and display products at the GAMA sponsored conventions and shows but a table at Origins would have cost us around $400.00 which is a large part of the newsletter's current liquid balance. Spending that much, without having a significant profit-producing product to sell to recoup the costs just could not be justified. We'll try again next year when our subscriber base is larger. We still haven't exceeded 500 subscriptions yet but we're creeping up there.

Gunslingers, the "stealth" Air Superiority game (because nobody knows when it will see print), is back in my hands and undergoing yet another rules rewrite. I was told to reduce the text by some 30%, redo the play aids, and turn the whole thing back in for another try. I hope to have the rewrite done by Origins 1991 and turned back over to GDW for production. Origins next year is my next best guess for the appearance of the game. Believe me, this is as frustrating for me as it is for you guys but like a fine wine, this game will not be served before its time. (Do not lose the faith!).

By the way, this is our Canadian special issue, featuring a number of articles from Canadian subscribers including one on the history of the Canadian Air Force. We promised an issue devoted to them if they won the tourney last year and since they did; well we yanks always are good for our words (good at eating them too).

I'd better sign off so, check six eh! (aargh a Maple-Leaf back there!!!)
