The First U.S. Eagle Kill!

January 17th 1991

by J.D. Webster

Background

Capt. Steve Tate, leader of a flight of four F-15C Eagles holding at a CAP Station in Southern Iraq during a predawn mission, received an AWACs warning of an impending attack by a Mirage F1. The Mirage was attempting to come up on the rear of the second F-15 element which was on the opposite side of the CAP circle.

Capt. Tate turned his element toward the bandit, and acquired a lock-on at twelve miles. The target was at 8,000 feet and headed West. Firing a single AIM7M Sparrow at 8 miles range, Capt. Tate observed a fireball moments later about four miles away as the Mirage disintegrated from a direct hit.
