Post-WWII Airforce and Dauntless

Ideas

by James E. Meldrum

Gamers may expand their horizons by using their AIRFORCE and DAUNTLESS games to simulate combat between Russian and British or American aircraft in hypothetical air battles over post-war Europe, or actual dogfights in Korea. In order to be able to play this variant, players must have access to AIRFORCE and/or DAUNTLESS, plus Battleline's expansion kit which furnishes, among other things, Soviet aircraft.

Since any post-war air conflicts over Europe would be bypothetical and there is little information available on Korean War air actions between propellor driven aircraft, players will have to play the "type-situation" scenarios included with the game. The most applicable scenarios for use with this game are the duel, dogfight, low-level solitaire vehicle attack, lowlevel airfield raid, and massed bombers.

In all cases, these scenarios should be set-up and played according the game rules. The only thing that really changes is the selection of aircraft available to the players.

Some changes, however, must be made to reflect post- war changes made in the USAF, RAF, and Soviet Air Force. In the night fighter scenario, players may use F4U (radar equipped) Mosquito, and a P-61 aircraft. All aircraft armaments remain the same except that the F-51, F4U, A-26, Spitfire, and IL-2 may now carry rockets. Soviet aircraft carry 10 rockets while all others carry 16. Rocket armed aircraft are governed by all rules governing German aircraft armed with air-to-air rockets except that these may only be used against ground targets in this variant. Any aircraft taking a hit from a rocket is destroyed immediately.

Aircraft found in AIRFORCE, DAUNTLESS, or the Battleline expansion kit that can be used in post-war or Korean War scenarios are listed below:

RAF:

Spitfire (Seafire, V, SIV, MVE), Sunderland, Mosquito (FB VI, B - IV), Tempest V.

USAF/USN:

P-51, F6F, F4U, PBY-5, B- 29, A-26B, C-47, TBF, P-61.*

Soviet Union:

LA7, LA9, LA11, IL-2 (represents IL-10), Tu2 (use Pe-2), B 29 (represents Tu-4, a B-29 copy), P-63 (lend lease aircraft), Yak- 9, C-47 (built under license).

*NOTE: All of these aircraft with the exception of the P- 61 and A26B may also be used by the RAF.

Scenarios

Duel & Dogfight

Use any fighter except P- 61. Play as in the regular rules.

Massed Bombers

Low-Level Scenarios

Use virtually any of these aircraft except the B-29 and P-61 armed with bombs, rockets, and guns.
