Yes, we're late. A lot late, in fact. I'll make my apologies brief, because I have of lot of things to say. A combination of factors, JD's moving to Michigan, my moving to Huntsville, transferring AIR POWER from Georgia to Alabama, GDW's insistence that JD complete Gunslingers IMMEDIATELY, and the fact that I am currently pulling overtime for my mew employer have all conspired to drive this Beyond the Valley of the Deadline. Nevertheless, it should be entertaining and Issue #11 will be following literally on its heels, probably less than two weeks behind. We do intend to get issue #12 out by year's end, so you'll have plenty of Air Superiority stuff to keep you warm during the holidays. You'll need it--Gunslingers has been pushed back into next year sometime. If you look at the last page, you'll see our new address in beautiful Huntsville, AL. In fact, if you went to ORIGINS, you saw our new address there. Please make sure you make a note of it since the forwarding of mail from LaGrange is, at best, sporadic. If you've sent in money to order something and the check has not been cashed, odds are good that I haven't gotten it yet. We are up-to-date as I write this on all our subscription orders and mail. I'm processing forwarded stuff as fast as I get it. If you've been lost in the shuffle, you have a couple of options. You can wait and hope your order gets forwarded, you can stop your check and issue another order, or you can write and tell me what you think should be coming in the mail. III tell you what we have as a current account status for you. Effective immediately, overseas subscribers can now opt for Air Mail Delivery. The cost is listed on the back page, and is quite substantial, but we are providing this service without profit. In fact, we'll actually lose a little money to Australia, Japan, and the Far East. You should get your issues a lot sooner this way. In this issue, we have a beautiful set of game charts produced by Pete Matthews as our pullout. These are really fine work and I encourage everyone to use them. We also have the second part of the "Their Finest Hour" review by Mo Morgan and the first part (of three!) of the ORIGINS Tournament 1990 by JD. I had some serious gripes about the tourney this year, and you'll read about some of the major objections in the next issue, but I have decided to stop whining and do something about it and have produced a set of Air Superiority Tournament Scoring guidelines for this issue. I will be running the tournament in Baltimore next year, hopefully with the help of Rob Pruden, and I think these guidelines will make for a much more enjoyable and equitable experience for all involved. The next issue is an important one. JD talks about it, but I have to put in my share as well. WE NEED YOUR HELP! I have lost my staff in moving to Huntsville and JD and I Simply cannot continue to produce 85%+ of the material for this newsletter. We need contributions that are finished, tested, and professional. We need editors willing to contribute free time to typing articles and making illustrations. We need copy editors and proofreaders who have access to Macintosh systems and modems so we can get things done quickly without resorting to the US Mail. But most of all, we need material. This has become a one-way journal, piping information from JD to the Air Superiority community. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it is not the intent of AIR POWER. GDW provides a mass market for JD's work, and we are not competing with them. We want to be a clearinghouse for good ideas that players contribute to the system. If the onus remains on us to fill every issue of AIR POWER, we Will stay behind schedule and be forced to compromise our standards--and I truthfully do not want that to happen. Sit down this month and write something. We may not like it, we may not use it, but you may be pleasantly surprised. Back issues are becoming something of a thorny issue here. While a lot of people ask for them, and they generate some revenue, my calculations indicate that they don't produce much profit (especially given the cost of mailing a whole stack of issues) and they take up a lot of room. There!s always a hassle because we seem to have every issue needed to fill an order but one, and the order gets held up as a consequence. J.D. and I have been considering discontinuation of back issues. If we decide to go this way, then starting with Issue #12, we will maintain a supply of back issues for one year after their release, and then we will drop them from our inventory. If you want to get some back issues, you'd need to order them soon. The cost of making small runs of these issues has grown precipitously (I don't have a friendlyneighborhood printer anymore) and we cannot afford to make them for everyone that orders them. We are considering collecting the best of previous issues into a separate "maxiissue" or perhaps selling the entire year's run in a bound format for a reasonable price. Your feedback on this too. Hope you enjoy our belated issue, and look for #11 soon.Turn & burn! Back to Table of Contents -- Air Power # 10 Back to Air Power List of Issues Back to MagWeb Magazine List © Copyright 1990 by J.D.
