Anthony Brett-James identifies 'T.S', the anonymous author of `Journal of a Soldier of the Seventy-first Regiment [Highland Light Infantry] from 1806 to 1815', as Captain Thomas Pococke. Christopher Hibbert on the other hand apparently attributed the work to a Thomas Howell, but neglected to cite his source. Recently a copy of the third edition has been acquired by the Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum with an inscription by a John Howell to the effect that he had `ghosted' the story for a man named James Todd, though in the actual text the author frequently refers to himself as Tom or Thomas. Can anyone throw any further light on the matter, or at least explain who Captain Thomas Pococke might have been.
