by Paul Chamberlain
AoN contributors Jack Gill, John Grehan and Paul Chamberlain have written chapters in an upcoming book on the Peninsula War, edited by Ian Fletcher, for Spellmount. Talking of Spellmount, two up-coming books in the Spellmount Library of Military History are The Military Adventures of Charles O'Neil with an Introduction by Bernard Cornwell, and Memoirs of the late Major General Le Marchant, 1766-1812 with an Introduction by Dr. David Chandler. O'Neil served with the 28th in the Peninsula and at Waterloo, whilst Le Marchant died leading one of the British cavalry's most successful charges at Salamanca. Both of these are re-prints of extremely rare books indeed only 93 of the original Le Marchant edition were published. Jamie Wilson is to be congratulated for bringing these two out again. Constable is getting into the bi-centenary of the '98 rising early with two reprints from Charles Dickson: The Wexford Rising in 1798 and Revolt in the North, Antrim and Down in 1798. I have suggested to Richard Dodman that he should ask Gerry Adams to do the reviews. Also coming from Constable is a reprint of Warnery's work on cavalry. Brent Nosworthy quoted extensively from this in Battle Tactics, and has contributed an introduction. More on this later. Constable is also offering the re-printed Napier in a special price edition of £12.95 per volume. Greenhill has recently issued the re-print of the final volume of Oman's History of the Peninsular War, and launched Lachouque's Anatomy of Glory at NapFair '97. In May, they will be issuing The Memoirs of Baron von Müffling in the Napoleonic Library series. This will have a new introduction from 'Mister Prussia' himself, Peter Hofschröer. Peter has recently submitted the manuscript for his long-awaited book on the Waterloo campaign to Lionel Leventhal, so not long to wait now! I saw recently that Scott Bowden's new book is due for publication soon. Called (I think) the Glory Years, this will be on the 1805 campaign with the 1806 and 1807 campaigns in preparation. Finally, Miniature Paints are probably familiar to a lot of figure painters. This firm has recently expanded its range, with a set of inks as well as some new acrylics. The inks include black, red, blue, green and brown whilst the new paints are scarlet, canary yellow, stone green, coffee amongst others. I like using inks, especially for horses and for base uniform colours as they have the ability to get into all the clothing folds and muscle areas. I haven't had a chance to try these new ones out yet, but those who have say that covering is good, and that the inks are particularly nice. Miniature Paints are widely available so check them out at your local stockist.
