The International Napoleonic Society will hold a Napoleonic Congress in Northern Italy in the summer of 1997. Final arrangements are being made for a late June meeting in either Alessandria (near Marengo) or Milan. Final details will be announced later in the Autumn. The topic of the conference is Europe Discovers Napoleon: 17931804. Scholars from around the world will look at Napoleon's rise to power and his early career. They will also discuss what was going on in other countries during this time, and the impact that Napoleon began to have on specific countries and Europe in general. Every aspect of life during this time will be covered: social, political, economic and military. In addition to the scholarly presentations, there will be opportunities to visit important Napoleonic sites such as Marengo and Lodi, and a number of significant Napoleonic museums in Marengo, Milan, Lodi and Parma. Several scholars have already agreed to participate in this programme, and the organisers are actively seeking additional participants. If you would like to propose a paper for presentation, or wish additional information, please contact David Markham, 458 Sea Lavender Terrace, Wellington, Florida 33414-3942, USA. International Napoleonic Society Announces Student Literary Award Two student awards for $500.00 each have been established by the International Napoleonic Society for the best published articles on Napoleonic subjects. The articles should demonstrate effective research techniques; a comprehensive understanding of the topic; a facility for writing; and contribute to our understanding of the subject.
