6 British Army: White Fatigues JacketsStuart Reid By the 1840s at least Highland Regiments had white collars and cuffs to their fatigue jackets irrespective of the facing colours worn on their red coats. Was this also the case in the Napoleonic period? A fairly well known Atkinson print shows yellow facings on the white linen jackets issued to recruits but it does not seem clear whether this was also the case with the tail-less woollen fatigue jackets. 7 French and Dutch Settlements in Southern India 1793/94Stuart Reid [a] Can anyone provide details of the seizure of the French settlement/trading station at Karikal [near Negapatam] in August 1793, probably by the 71st Highlanders. [b] In the 1760s the Dutch maintained a fort at Negapatam [now Negapattinnam] in Madras. What was its status in 1793/4? Was it already in British hands or was it seized in 1794 when Holland became the pro-French, Batavian Republic? If seized at this time can anyone provide details, particularly of any involvment by the 71st Highlanders who were certainly in the area in 1794? 8 East India Company Marines? 1807Stuart Reid Reproduced on p90 of the Time-Life book The East Indiamen [1980] is a painting, probably by a Company artist, of an inquiry held in the EIC factory at Canton in 1807. In the foreground are two European soldiers dressed in an odd uniform. Both wear white mosquito trousers and waistcoats and black round hats - without lace. Their coats however are rather old-fashioned, fairly long in the skirts and cut away to expose the waistcoat. They are lined white with white lapels, but dark blue collar and cuffs. There is rectangular white lacing on the cuffs and probably edging the collar, and white shoulder straps. Equipment is white and both men also wear black stockings. Can anyone identify the unit to which these men belonged? 9 Chevau Lanciers Francais and the RestorationAndrew Young Can anyone tell me what, if any, changes there were in the organization, title and uniform of the six regimentr of Chevau-legers Francis following the Restoration of 1814? 10 Hessen-Darmstadt Infantry in the PensisulaDavid Blake Does anyone have a list of the infantry regiments from Hessen-Darmstadt, and their uniforms, during the Peninsula war?
