The Dusty Archive

Napoleonic Events 1995

by Paul Chamberlain

A new feature for the Dusty Archive is a Napoleonic Events Diary, which lists all the Napoleonic-orientated events to be held over the coming year. It will be constantly updated, as new information is sent in. If you read the Diary and discover that your event is incorrectly entered, or you know of an event that has not been included, please send the information to me via the Editor. You will note that there are a number of Conferences planned for the coming months. Here are details of one of them.

WELLINGTON CONFERENCE, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON, 15th July 1995

This event will be organised by the Archives and Manuscripts Department, University of Southampton, in conjunction with the Hartley Institute. Its focus will be principally on the military career of Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington.

The Wellington papers held at the University are a collection of major importance both for military and political studies. They span the period from 1790 until the Duke's death in 1852. Amongst the overall holdings are approximately 15,000 papers for Wellington's career in India up to 1805. The section for the Peninsula War, which exceeds 25,000 papers in total, provides an unrivalled source for the history of British participation in the war. The post-Peninsular war period is equally well documented.

There are, for example, about 30,000 papers for the period 1833-52, which includes material for Wellington's third tenure of the post of Commander in Chief of the British Army. The Conference will provide an important forum to promote recent Southampton-based research work. The papers presented at the meeting will reflect not only the wealth of material available, but also the range of subjects which are currently being studied. The Speakers will be: Brian April on Relations Between Wellington and the Portuguese Government, Bill Halliwell on Wellington and India, Mark Romans and Stephen Petty on the Peninsular War, Karen Robson on Wellington and Military Patronage, Chris Woolgar on Gurwood's Edition of Wellington's Dispatches and Wellington's Image and Reputation.

There will also be a keynote address. Details of the conference are obtainable from Dr Chris Woolgar or Karen Robson, Archives and Manuscripts Department, Hartley Library, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton, SO17 1BJ. Tel. 0 1703 592721/593724, or Fax 01703 593007.

A Guide to Miliary Museums and Other Places of Military Interest

This book is produced by Terence and Shirley Wise, and is now in its 8th edition (published by Terence Wise, 1994), price 3.95. It is an indispensible guide to all the military museums of the UK, detailing their locations, collections, opening times and admission fees. It has a very useful index of the regiments of the British Army, in terms of their old regimental numbers and their later amalgamations and new names. If you have a particular interest in the British Army then this very inexpensive publication should be on your reference shelf.
