I have great pleasure in including in
this issue a copy of the very stimulating lecture that Paddy Griffith gave at the
last Partizan Press Napoleonic Weekend. Although it is outside our period, the
next issue will include a review of Paddy's new book on the Western Front
1917-1918.
Readers of History Today may have seen a snippet about a new thrice
yearly publication called War in History. Edited by Hew Strachan (European
Armies and the Conduct of War) and Dennis Showalter, it interprets its subject
as broadly as possible: it is as receptive to the study of classical or feudal
warfare as to Napoleonic; it embraces the study of conflict at sea and in the air
as well as on land; it views war in its economic, social and political as much as
purely military aspects! The first issue does not have anything from our period,
but there is a good debate on Paul Fussell at War, as well as an article by James
Sadkovich on German Military Incompetence through Italian eyes, which I
found very interesting. There are some informative book reviews, including one
for Russel Weigley's Age of Battles. Individual subscriptions are £ 25 per
year, contact Deborah Rowe on 071-873 6358 for details.
