29 Royal Marines

by Magnus Guild

Each 'division' (equating roughly with an army regiment) had colours. The first division was at Chatham, the second was at Portsmouth, the third at Plymouth, and in 1805 a fourth was added at Woolwich. Marine colours resembled those of the line having a 'Kings' and a 'Regimental' colours. These were altered in 1801 (Union with Ireland) and 1802 (change of facing colour on becoming a Royal regiment). They were largely used for parades, but there is some evidence that the second battalion carried the Portsmouth divisional colours in Spain in 1812. Note: semi-permanent battalions were formed by taking companies from the various divisions from 1810 onwards. (Source: Nelson's Navy, Brian Lavery, Conway, 1989)
