Our unit made up of the 37th ILL and Sgt. Acerra of the 1st USV were called upon to meet the vile secesh. They had taken the ridge line of the area with 7 cannon of various make. Hugey's and Wiggins battery.(1, 12 lb Napoleon 2, 3" rifles and 2, 10 lb Parrot rifles and 2, James Rifles) and there crews. with a force of infantry from the 7th AR. and the 4th AR. in support. We moved out into the field and feinted towards the ridge and the guns began a bombardment, when we laid down and waited out the first rounds. After the guns first round of firing we moved by the right file as a force and moved into a ravine off by the side across the road and waited out the bombardment.

During the artillery barrage members of the force myself included moved forward and sniped at the gunners. When the artillery ran short of ammo we moved by the left oblique to the field across the road again, and mounted a forward movement. The Confederate force sent out skirmishers and held us back till the main force could deploy. During the assault we sustained injury's as did they but we overcame the skirmishers.
