A short note in the British journal "History Today" recently, (Vol. 52, No. 9... September 2002), mentions a 'systematic search' to identify the bodies of Republican soldiers shot by Nationalists and buried in 'temporary' ditches and mass graves along the roadside near Leon. According to the journal this research is being carried out by a group called The Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory, which during July 2002 was excavating mass graves at Piedrafita de Babia outside the city of Leon;the work aided by state-of-the-art geo-radar equipment. The Association has gathered witness statements, and family testimony for this particular site, where the massacre is said to have taken place on 5th November 1937. Little further information is given in the note apart from the Association's estimate that across Spain over 35,000 victims of Nationaist reprisals were not formally buried. Sadly, there's no web-site indicated for the group, but other members may well know more of its activities and membership.
