Regulares Infantry

Machine Gun Companies

by Jaime De Miguel

The "Regulares" infantry Machine Gun companies were created in 1922 using the folowing pattern: Infantry: a captain, two lieutnants, a sub ltnant, four sergeants, four NCO's , a trumpeter, two first class soldiers, and forty two soldiers. All of them were Spanish. The company had nineteen mules for the transport of four Hotchkiss machine guns.

A "Regulares" Cavalry MG company was organized as follows: A captain, two ltnants, one sub ltnant, two sergeants, eight NCO's , two trumpets, eight first class soldiers, and fifty four soldiers, they had twenty eight transport horses to carry six machine guns. Again all were Spanish citizens as medium calibre machine guns should not be given to Moorish troops. (During the Morocco Rif campaign during the 20's quite a few local police units supported the rebels killing their officers and betraying the Spanish).

These organizations were held till the end of the war . Please take note that Mehal-la (Morrocan Civil Guard) MG units differed in that the crew were of Moorish origin . Mehal-la units even had a small mortar.
