International Brigade Survivors

by Rolfe Hedges

On Friday November 10, 2000, the Gaurdian newspaper in its G2 supplement interviewed the last surviving veterans of the International brigade. According the the article only 40 are left alive. Which reminds me, that readers may not have seen that Bill Alexander passed away in the summer of this year.

As a point of interest one of the survivors interviewed was a George Wheeler, and it was such a G. Wheeler that Mike Squires in his book on Battersea and the Spanish Civil War could not trace. I sent Mike a copy of the interview so hopefully he can now fill in the gaps in his research.

Anyway for those who missed it, the Gaurdian article is online at: http://www.guardianunlimited.co.uk/galleryguide/0,6191,395635,00.html
