Spanish Civil War

By Jaime De Miguel

"VICTIMAS DE LA GUERRA CIVIL" by Santos Juli  (co-ordinating) J. Casanova, J.M. Sole i Sabate, J.Villaroya, y F. Moreno. Publisher "Temas de hoy.Historia" 1999. ISBN 84-7880-983-X. 4500 Ptas.

A deep and tremendous collective study of the repression in both sides along the war and afterwards by the nationalist. The authors are University professors and well known historians of the SCW who have researched and compiled thoroughly information on the fratricide policy, the assassination without mercy, spirit of revenge, brutality, torture, rape and predatory behaviour of both sides against any dissidence. The executions (totalling more than 200.000), the trials, concentration camps, prison, economic and labour reprisal, exile, etc.

It is the accurate story of the pain and death of so many known and unknown victims of the irrational hate, which must be learned as an important part of SCW history, showing that both sides were guilty of such activities and specially the merciless cruelty of the new nationalist regime aided and blessed by the catholic church.

"LOS CARROS DE COMBATE EN LA GUERRA DE ESPANA 1936 - 1939 VOL 1" by J. Mazarrasa. 160 pgs. many colour drawings and photos. Quiron Ediciones 1998. ISBN 84-87314-37-6. 7975 Ptas.

A splendid development of former Mazarrasa's work on the same subject. Although photographs are more or less the same as seen before in other Mazarrasa's books, there is a very good and daily report of the armoured units activities and exploits, with great detail of number of vehicles, losses, and information of their participation in the battles. If your interest rely on AFV it is your book, and it is a must if you can read Spanish text. The only problem is the high price.

We hope that vol. 2 deals with a detailed "Tiznaos" list not seen since Albert book many years ago.

"LA CABALLERIA EN LA GUERRA CIVIL" by R. Lion, J. Silvela and A.Bellido. 135 pgs.many photos and colour drawings. Quiron Ediciones 1999. ISBN 84-87324-20-1. 4500 Pts.

A very interesting compilation of the cavalry participation along the war with detailed description of the exploits, battles, units, etc. Although there is a resume of the "partes de guerra" according their origin, most of the information refers only to the nationalist cavalry units, so there is an important gap on republican cavalry units, specially about militia. Written from the nationalist point of view (there's even a list of the officers "gloriously fallen" during the war, and a list of the awarded nationalist officers or units), but still recommended.

"LOS ASALTOS AL MONTE INTXORTA 1936-1937" by Pablo Beldarrain. Editorial Geu Argitaldaria 1980. 139 pgs. some photos. 1500 pts.

This amazing book was published by the Institute of History "Bidasoa", and is a first hand information of the defence of the Intxorta peeks given by the Basque nationalist "Martiartu" Btn. commander. Written both in Basque and Spanish provides a very accurate description of the different assaults against this fortified position and how it delayed Mola and Camilo Alonso Vega forces until its abandonment by the republicans. Detailed information on the Basque units, and also on other Btns. like UHP, and the CNT "Malatesta" Btn. The book which would be difficult to find outside the Basque country, can be purchased at "Kirikano book shop" C/ de Larreategui 11 Bilbao Phone 34. (9)4 4241174

"BOMBARDEOS DEL LITORAL MEDITERRANEO DURANTE LA GUERRA CIVIL VOL 1", by J.L. Infiesta 140 pgs. Quiron Ediciones 1999, many photos some colour drawings.

An interesting research on the air raids against the Republican Mediterranean towns made by the nationalist and the italian/german planes and vessels. Accurate compilation of bombers and fighters and characteristics. Also the republican actions against Majorca (Bayo column) and other minor actions. 4990 Pts.

"HISTORIA DE LAS BRIGADAS MIXTAS DEL EJERCITO POPULAR DE LA REPUBLICA" by Carlos Engel. Editorial Almena 234 pgs.

Many new and never seen photos from the Spanish National Library, colour drawings of uniforms, and colour photos of badges, medals, etc. Alongside with Sala Larrazabal "Historia del Ejercito de la Rep£blica" and Alpert book on the Republican Army, this work is a must for anyone searching for the Republican units. A short but detailed (sometimes too short: ten to twenty lines) story of each and every Mixed Brigade including the International Brigades and the Euzkadi Army brigades. 2950 pts. Worth value.

The REINA SOFIA Modern Museum Art (Madrid) is showing a new Robert Capa photographs exhibition.

Although most of these photos are well known there are a few ones not seen in former exhibitions. The catalogue is really worth although a bit expensive (5900 pts.)

QUIRON EDICIONES has also published a monography written by JL Infiesta on the Anti Aircraft guns which I haven't seen yet, although the review that appeared on the Boletin de Historia Militar (Defence Ministry) says it is full of photos and drawings, lots of SCW history, but lacking technical data.
