The Italian CTV organisation as given in "La partecipazione italiana alla guerra civile spagnola", by Rovighi and Stefani, of the Historical Office, General Staff, Italian Army, seems to warrant for the following amendments to the TO&E given by CPQ8 ( Command Post Quarterly by GDW games- now EHQ which supported the wargame system Command Decision ) for this period. However, it should be said that I'm not questioning the accuracy of those TO&Es; they have to cover the whole Aragon campaign, while this is just the TO&E for the CTV at the beginning of this campaign. It is also possible that for the CPQ8 TO&Es choices were taken I'm not aware of. Also, this source is authoritative, but nobody is immune from mistakes. The mixed Italian-Spanish "Flechas/Frecce" ("Arrows") Infantry Division will be dealt with separately. The other large units of the CTV at this time were:
"Littorio" Infantry Division CTV Artillery Raggruppamento Carristi (Tank Group) Other Corps units
Fiamme Nere - 23 di Marzo The TO&E given in CPQ8 needs the following amendments:
2) Replace the names of the "Bufalo" and "Disperata" Cohorts with: "Invincibile" and "Vampa". 3) The artillery had 1 75L27 Group less and 1 (IV) 65L17 Group more (with pack mules instead of trucks); the remaining 75L27 group is the XI, the 100L16 Group is the VIII. 4) The AT and AA assets were much smaller: 53rd AT Battery on 2 37L45 gun models, ist and 6th AA Batteries each on 1 20L65 gun model; add 1 AAMG company on 2 AAMG stands. 5) Add 1 divisional "L" Company, with: 1 command stand, 2 flamethrower infantry stands, 2 light trucks. 6) Add 1 divisional MG battalion, with: HQ, with: 1 command stand, 1 car, 1 support stand, 1 light truck with field kitchen, 1 light general supply truck; 3 MG Coys, each with: 3 MMG stands. Littorio The TO&E given in CPQ8 needs the following amendments:
2) The artillery had no 75L27 guns. It had 1 100L16 Group, 2 65L17 Groups (motorised). 3) The AT and AA assets were exactly as for the Fiamme Nere - 23 di Marzo Division, with the 5ist 37mm AT Battery, the 3rd and 8th 20mm AA Batteries, and an AAMG Company. 4) Add 1 divisional MG battalion, with: HQ, with: 1 command stand, 1 car, 1 support stand, 1 light truck with field kitchen, 1 light general supply truck; 3 MG Coys, each with: 3 MMG stands. 5) The X "L.C." Unit was also present, but their flame-throwers are assumed to be already listed with the "Folgore" Assault Battalion. Raggruppamento Carristi The TO&E given in CPQ8 can be used, with the following amendments:
2) However, 2 spare CV3/35 can be added to the supply/naintenance troops. 3) The "Motomitraglieri" Company is probably better dealt by considering these stands motorcycle LMG stands (ROF2), not motorcycle MMG stands. 4) The Armoured Car Company, having 7 real vehicles, should be given 1 model only, not 2. 5) At this time, the ATG Company of the Motor Battalion had 1 37L45 ATG and 1 47L32 ATG (battalion gun), instead of 2 47L32 ATGs. 6) The Mixed Mechanised Battalion had 1 47L32 ATG, not 2, in its ATG Company. CTV Artillery Heavy Artillery Group: exactly as per CPQ8. Medium Artillery Group: HQ (as per the Med Arty Group HQ in CPQ8), I (100L16), II (100L16), III (75L27) Groups, all on 2 Batteries. Maybe the III was one of the 75L27 Groups listed in CPQ8 as divisional artillery. Other artillery units were being formed at this time. AA Group: 75L46 AA groups as per CPQ8; 20L65 AA Batteries: 2 only, each on 1 gun model. Other Corps units one Engineer construction battalion and other second-line troops. "Aviazione Legionaria" air support On the continent; does not include the Wing stationed in Majorca. Number of planes are combat-ready real aircraft, not CD models; however, the date for these figures is October, 1937. The aviation gave an effective support to the offensive and the bomber Groups probably had built up their strength by March 1938.
2 bomber Groups (17 S81) 2 bomber Groups (6 S79) 1 bomber Squadron (3 BR20) 1 attack Squadron (6 BA65) 1 recon Group (20 RO37).
