Book Review
review by Rolfe Hedges
by Shirley Mangini Shirley Mangini became interested on SCW ten years ago, and discovered that women almost did not appear in any of the official histories. Following Mangini, the Republic and the war years meant a giant step in social evolution, letting women go from a medieval situation (not being able to go alone in the streets) to a very advanced society in which they developed a rnain role at the factories or even in the trenches!. There were not only great stars as "Pasionaria" or the anarchist Fedaka Montseny (first European female who became Minister), but also Congress members like Clara Campoamor (who brought female vote), Victoria Kent, and Margarita Nelken. A great part of the book is dedicated to the anonymous women who learned to write and to read during those years, and wove a combative spirit alongside their male comrades (even at the Nationalist side), many of them being shot by firing squads, or forced to exile afte rthe war. It also includes direct testimonies of the survivors, which would have been lost in a few more years.
