Inquiries to obtain a copy of the recently published "Durrati: 1896-1936" (reviewed elsewhere) led me to Freedom Press who inform me that they have adequate stocks available. Current price is only £ 8.95 and this is Post Free a saving of over £ 2.50 so don't delay and order today. Freedom still has a few issues (only 6) of Liz Willis's out of print "Woman in the Spanish Civil War" Pamphlet remaining at œ1.50. For anyone still seeking a copy of "Durruti: The People Armed" this is back in stock at only £ 10.95 During my visit Freedom Press very kindly provided a review copy of the latest Anarchist Quarterly under the well established "Raven" name. Titled 'Anarchism and the Arts', issue 33, features interviews with both the screenwriter Jim Allen and Director Ken Loach and the making of.the film "Land & Freedom". In 'Looking forward from the Spanish War', Jim Allen provides background detail of how: it took over four years to raise the money for "Land & Freedom" which was shot in a mere 7 weeks and the resistance of distributors to show it in main stream cinemas. Under 'The Revolution Betrayed' Ken Loach talks through the sources used, the film's development, theme, influences, experiences, comparisons and criticisms. A prior chapter 'Rendering Realism on Film', explains the financial constraints which ultimately governed the films content, operating on a shoe-string budget forced some scenes to be cut or shorter than intended and use of a narrative with flashbacks simply lessened cost. The impact of the film is discussed together with its historical content, its distribution and audience acceptance. All in all an interesting read, recommended at £ 3.00 A good selection of anarchist and Spanish Civil War titles are stocked by Freedom Press who welcome personal callers to their bookshop which is located at: Angel Alley, 84b Whitechapel High Street (East Aldgate Tube Station), London E1 7QX. Tel: (44) 0171-247-9249 [Fax (44) 0171-377-9526] Opening Hours are Monday to Friday 10:30am-6pm and 11am-5pm Saturdays. If in town please look them up.
