The armoured car group available to the cavalry branch of the Spanish Army in 1936 was the Grupo de Autoametralladores-canon located in Arenjuez. In 1936, it had only one armoured car squadron, with 12 Bilbao armoured cars, out of the two squadrons of its paper establishment. It had been formed on 1st July 1936 and remained loyal to the Republic. The nationalists formed their 1st Cavalry Division in November 1937. This unit was part of the Nationalist Army of the North. In 1937 again, Gen. G. Queipo de Llano's Nationalist Army of the South had four cavalry groups commanded by: Lt. Col. G. Figuerola, G. Gonzalez Longoria, F. Ramos, and E. Lopez de Latona. Each of these groups had one armoured car squadron (type unknown, most likely improvised armoured trucks). On 1st July 1938, the Nationalists formed their 2nd Cavalry Division under Gen. P. gete Illera, and allocated it to their Southern Army. This entered into action on 9th July against the so-called "Merida" (or "La Serena) bulge in Estremadura. In December 1938, the nationalist Gen. A. Saliquet's Army of the Centre had its own cavalry brigade under Col. R. Ibanez de Aldecoa y Urcullu. Each of the brigade's two cavalry regiments had its wn armoured car squadron, but once again, the type of these vehicles is unknown. Related
